ACTIVISM
Artists can give voices to communities.
Meg Fish Saligman is a 1983 graduate from Olean High School successful prize winning mural artist. She creates art in communities with people from those communities. As an artist she takes their message and visually creates a design to give them a louder voice. Artists contribute to communities. Her artwork is a major part of Philadelphia culture.
Artists observe our world. Artists draw attention to what they don't feel is right. Or they seek to solve the problem. They make art that helps us think and feel.

This was his first sculpture. He is known for his official presidential portraits of the Obamas. The Obama portraits have pride, dignity and relatable casual poses to capture them. Nike Kapernick and sweatshops
Nike uses Kapernick and his quest to bring social awareness to black lives matter. Keep in mind they are just trying to sell sneakers. Nike removes the Betsy Ross flag design when Kalernick voices his opinion that the symbol is being used by hate groups to say they liked it better when we were back in the skave era. The problem is Kapernick is ignoring the slave wages and unfair treatment of workers in third world countries. He needs to stand and be the voice. Read about a coach who was fired for not taking a Nike deal due to convictions against sweatshops.

UPDATE. Taking a knee in 2020 has come to mean more. After a series of black deaths. George Floyd died over the course of 9 minutes under the knee of an officer. Kapernick at the time was taking a knee for what he claimed was the fact that blacks weren’t a part of America. Many myself included didn’t take this as constructive criticism. Kapernicks position is against police brutality. The NFL has reinstated him.
Nike notably stood up to condemn racism and police brutality back in 2018 by making Colin Kaepernick a face of the "Just Do It" Campaign. The former quarterback was ousted from the NFL in 2016 after he began kneeling during the National Anthem in protest of police brutality and racism in the United States. He has since worked with Nike to release several powerful ads, such as the ones below, and fully embodies the quote, "Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything."
