Formalism
Style of art in which the design is the main focus, not reality. Reality can be part of the design or the design can be completely invented.

Design & Composition
Formalism is concerned with design and less on reality it hosts a variety of styles: abstraction, fauvism, minimalism, surrealism, futurism, abstract expressionism. It has a range from loosely based on reality to completely removed from reality. How far do you want to go away from a literal subject matter to abstract design? Start with something real and boil it down into abstraction OR play with techniques and play with the elements of art. The tools or elements of design are color, line, shape, texture, form, value. Stress what appeals to you and minimize the rest.
ACTIVITY #2
Start Real: Boil down shapes into designs
ASTEP ONE: Get a realistic resource. It might already be abstract in nature (horizontal lines emphasized in beach, close up of flowers that look landscapish.) Consider something dear to you or from internet. Consider editing a copy of the photo to be more abstract. Play with filters, crop it in. STEP TWO: Abstract your realistic resource. Capture the essence of your subject's shape and boil it down (See bunny below). STEP THREE: how have others handled your subject matter? Google search your subject or use links below. How did they handle your subject matter. Consider your use of pattern, color, shape. Artists to explore Abstract Subjects Klimt Kandinsky Portraits Animal Landscape Patterns Fields Forest Beach CREATE 2 SKETCHES: #1 interpret your realistic resource as boiled down abstract design (see bunny design) #2 interpret your resource using style found from search. DIGITAL OPTION You can use photography challenge below to count as 1 of your sketches. OR use Apps or filters to turn your art into abstract art inspiration STYLES OF ART UNIT GOALS: At the end of our unit 3 Major Styles of Art (Aesthetics): (Realism, Emotionalism, and Formalism featuring Abstraction). You will have ideas for projects for each, have gathered resources. You will create 1 project based on what you learned. This w |

7 inspirations for abstract art :
1. Paint something that is already abstract. Consider the beach skyline, space. Take abstract photos close up that capture design
Edit photos to become more abstact
2. Start realistic, emphasize what speaks to you then simply abstract the rest into a design. They did an example of emphasizing an owls eyes and beak realistically, then the rest is artistically distorted. Consider Fauvism
3. Fractured reality. Represent a real scene such as a bustling street and reduce the subject matter into interacting shapes
4. Meditation artwork. Use unique materials and get lost in the process and let it unfold.
5. Push For texture and color. Use line along with shape to create more texture. Try layering, palette knives, painting over texture like foil/ newspaper
6. Mix Hard lines and shapes with free strokes. Consider painting it in cubism and let your design wander into abstraction.
7. Splatter art. Let yourself lay out your art on the floor build up texture. Consider building a background color or hard edge items to loosen up or go pure splatter. Get lost in the process.
