Build your Creative Confidence
"How to Build Your Creative Confidence" by David Kelley Not everyone is labeled a "creative" but everyone has the ability to be creative. But along the way, someone tells us that our creations are "ugly" or "awful" and we begin to lose our confidence in our ability to create. Some people even rely on excuses, such as "I'm left-brained" to opt out of creating and to prevent others from judging their efforts.
Art is a voice! We don't all need to be realistic drawers---thats a skill, not a voice. Be sure to try out different styles of art to find a style to inspire your own voice! David Kelley, founder of the design firm IDEO, has made it his mission to help people gain back their creative confidence Ted Talks on creativity |
There are four creative traits of thinking according to Torrance: FFOE. Fluency. Flexibility. Originality Elaboration. Fluency is coming up with many ideas to get a good idea. Quantity leads to quality. Flexibility is the ability to think outside of one category of ideas. Originality is the ability to think of ideas others don’t. It’s uses inspiration. Elaboration is addition detail beyond what is needed to identify an object.
Look at your circle test test and evaluate how you applied Toraances Traits if Creative thinking. Brainstorming and othe divergent thinking exercises can make these traits stronger too. Instructions at the site above. Do this exercise and then discuss the characteristics of creative thinking according to Torrance: Flexibikty, Fluency, Originality and Elaboration.

Get ideas by Reinventing Ideas
Music is an art form. I was listening to Weezer's new hit "Rain Down in Africa". I mockingly say that because it is every note the same as the original. Does this make Weezer a great song still? Is it only because no one heard the original? What did Weezer truly create that was not already in existence? They didn't compose, or put together any arrangement of ideas of their own.
Careful when you use a resource! Did you just copy the composition too! Mix it with a couple of resources to compose it differently, change the mood or meaning. Disturbed's rendition of the old Simon and Garfunkel song "Sound of Silence", or the use of Apocalyptic's cellos to change the interpretation of Metallica's music. Art is art! What we judge in music as artistically redone, or mixed or mashed is what are art should be OR as copied ---Don't be a Weezer.
Toto Rain Down in Africa vs Weezer Rain Down in Africa - no difference, not artistic interpretation but replication
Simon and Garfunkel Sound of Silence vs Disturbed Sound of Silence - Artistic interpretation
Simon from S&G fame travelled to Africa and spent time with authentic music in creating his album Graceland
Metallica interpreted by Apocalyptica
Queen listened to Opera in creating their album A Night at the Opera with the hit Bohemian Rhaspody
Original Opera song by Time to Say Goodbye Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman (Phantom of the Opera star) sing Time to Say Goodbye compared to Jason Derulo's remake with Nicki Minaj

Get inspired by other artists / cultures like Picasso
Picasso gets his own style from AfricaLes Desmoiselles D'Avignon. Picasso. He was inspired by tribal African masks. He became known as the father of modern art. Can you see the similarities? Ultimately he turned everything he painted into harsh shapes and would combine side and front views such as Weeping woman. What evidence do you see of side view and profile?
He did get realistic resources to draw all the women he painted, then he combined it with how the African masks were done (broken into shapes). So do the same get a resource for your subject matter and a separate resource for how you want it to look (broken into shapes, more painterly like Van Gogh) don't be afraid to look at what it old and reinvent it. It worked for Picasso and many Musicians! Check out different styles of art to inspire you to find your own. Weeping woman has the geometric shapes like the early African masks. It shows more than one view of the face at a time. |
See art as a process! Not a product
Artists seek inspiration. Then they plan how it will come into being. They create and reflect and edit as they go. They reflect during creation as well as at the end to create a visual expression of their idea.

III. CREATE
Remember your initial concept and support it with your choices as you create. Deepen the message. Get resources. Create warmups on the side to master materials.
IV. REFLECTION
What other ways could you support your message more clearly. Consider following a good idea through a couple of lessons. Add your artwork to your portfolio with reflections that show evidence of figuring where you want to go next.
