THEME STORYTELLING
We are all Story tellers
"Narrative art is art that tells—or narrates—a story through imagery. The power of a story is in how and what it makes us feel. Images ignite imagination, evoke emotions and capture universal cultural truths and aspirations. We think you will see a bit of yourself in the collection—even in stories from long ago or depictions of worlds in the distant future." - Lucas Art Museum

Elements of a story
Every story has: a character, setting and mood. For personal stories remember these parts as you felt them. Don’t be afraid to tell a TALL STORY or consider whose POINT OF VIEW in the story you are drawing.
Stories have plots, and characters overcome obstacles that transform them. Our best personal stories have these elements too. Brainstorm the setting of your story. Overemphasize the emotion and make it a tall tale. . Consider a MOOD to empasizw: fairytale, horror, spooky, comical, REINVENT characters or stories from books, movies and games and change their setting, problems, characters, maybe parody yourself into it.
SYMBOLISM can push the meaning of the story. Consider whose point of view to show in the story Consider how your situation is similar to another situation METAPHOR. Or perhaps a PARODY on something famous that already exists
There are three types of stories : personal, illustration, and myth/fantasy

How Artists have Told Stories
Judith and Holofernes:
Myth, and Personal Story Metaphor
his painting rather gruesome but was popular in the Baroque period. This is an Old Testament story of Judith who seduces Holofernes a General of a tyrannical King. She kills him before he can attack her city. She places his head in a hand basket and carries it through the city. This story is a metaphor for the artist. Even though this is an old testament story it also tells about the artist.

COMPOSITION
Above: Its a horizontal composition with passive characters. To the left: This painting is dynamic. It’s characters are compressed into a vertical space. The women actively subdue our general. The arms and body create strong diagonal lines that point us to his head and sword. The sword isn’t a saber a general would own. The jolt of the sword is a crucifix to show the righteous of the deed being done. |
Artemesia Gentileschi's life - how does she use metaphor with the biblical story?
Artemis Gentileschi (above left) father was a painter who studied under Caravaggio, the horizontal painting above. Caravaggio was well known for this style of shading and use of lighting. Her father hired her a different tutor to show her perspective so her backgrounds would be better. He raped her, promised he'd marry her. She put him on trial where she was physically tortured on the stand to verify it as truthful. He was sentenced to eight months She later found happiness by marrying a lesser known artist and moving to a Florence. Artemisia went on to be the first female in the Florence Arts Academy. A major achievement for a female during this time.
How does she use art to tell her Story?
Her artwork is empowering. She shows herself as the attacker and her former attacker as her victim. That is a theme she does though the majority of her work. She shows herself as a self portrait of Judith, wearing a bracelet with Diana queen of the hunt aka Artemis to clue us to her identity.
This story is based on the bible but is also a metaphor for the artist.

NEW UPDATE on CaravaggioHow has it changed since his last?
|
Later on Caravaggio fled Rome Italy accused of murder . His painting became darker and somber. In 2014 a painting he re-did of Judith & Holofernes was found in a antique cluttered French attic space after 400 years. It was in great condition only covered in dust and a little water damage.
How do we know it's a Caravaggio? It was x-ray'd and shows the artist changing his mind as he goes, and it has his ticks in his style to help authenticate it. Its provenance has no record of its whereabouts for 150years but its existence was mentioned in letters to the duke. Caravaggio was shunned after he died lead poisoning had made him mad! (same with Van gogh and Goya) He had murdered a man and was known for violence. Read his Bio below its awesome. What's it worth? It is expected to go to auction for $171M this year. There are only 65 paintings by Caravaggio so this would make a 65th. It would be a crown jewel for a gallery to pull in revenue. In paying for a master piece you pay for all the years of experience in creating the cumunating piece, and there are so few. Why so much? There's renewed interest in the old masters and the renaissance. Many artworks have been destroyed as people tried to clean them because they look so dark. Simple supply and demand. Work cited: https://www.cnn.com/style/article/france-rediscovered-caravaggio-auction-intl-scli/index.htmlre to edit. It was almost stolen! Now imagine how the burglars feel as they read this news! Caravaggio BIOgraphy is amazing Orphaned by the bubonic plague at 11, and was always looking for a fight. A great movie if they made it. |
