Drawing helps us learn to see like an artist
Learning to draw is important skill to develop because it is a skill in learning to see, observe and percieve. Drawing uses Perception skills. Drawing is seeing. Based on Betty Edwards Drawing in the Right Side of the Brain

Perceive Spaces
We can see space as the space around and behind objects as negative space.
In studio we drew a vase face, and negative space of scissors.

Draw a Monster Vase with Mrs. Welka Face and intro Contour Drawing hand(neg/positive spaces; edges). Explore the shift from L Brain to R Brain (Studio 10/11). To draw a Vase Face we start by drawing one line from the top of our paper to the bottom. This line is a drawing of a face from the side looking towards the center of our paper. Then we draw the mirror reflection of that line creating a Vase shape between the two faces. The first drawing is from imagination. The second drawing requires observation : distance from the middle of the paper, the degree of the curve, change of direction, and looking at negative space. To add in a creative edge consider what to do with the three shapes on your paper. Visit
What is negative space
Draw negative space with scissors See the spaces around objects (negative) to get down complicated angles (Studio 10/12)
Tracing with a Viewfinder, and then re-drawing that hand on a toned paper (lights/shadows, edges, spaces)

Perceive Relationships
Grid Drawing
Drawing of Picasso Grid breaks down the whole images into smaller parts. Draw each square of the grid. Look where lines cross the grid lines. Look how lines intersect, there angle where they meet, try to see it like a letter with an angle.

Half an Image Drawing.
Half an image can help you develop your creative or drawing skills. Use a portion of an image that gets cut off or even cut into strips. Glue down half. Now keep the image going where it got cut off. . Any line that’s at the border needs to extend into your drawing. Redraw the missing part or have it transform into something new. Drawings done by Adam and Josh Hoopes. |

Guidelines
Guidelines show relationships of all the parts in a drawing. . For example Face guidelines help us lay down the relationships between all the features of the face as they relate to each other, this is a guide you could look up. We can even make our own Guidelines by noticing the sizes and relationships and making marks on our paper to help us draw it with more accuracy. IMPOSED STRUCTURE is a guideline that uses shapes to represent the whole object and then going back to do the drawing in that spot. All of these help with alignment |

Imposed Structures
Draw a basic shape of an object then go back and use it as a guideline

Perceive Edges
Blind Contour is a way to get hand-eye co-ordination. As your eye perceives and looks along the contour of what its drawing your hand records what the eye is seeing at the same rate.
|
This next video is pretty awesome because the artist draws with a white Cran. She can’t really see what she’s drawing and she can’t pick. At the very end she uses dark coffee and brushes over top of her drawing so that she can see it at the end. Try that for blind contour
|
Contour DrawingIt’s best to warm up and do a blind contour drawing first of your subject. Contour drawing does the same type of intensive looking . Contour drawing uses a Quick glancing back and forth us to your subject and your paper. Watch the head movements of the artist in this first video. In the end contour drawing can have limited lifting up of the pencil.

Perceive Lights and Shadows
In studio class we shaded a sphere, and tones our own paper to make it mistimed paper then we drew a skull using an eraser and charcoal pencil.

Tone your own paper by rubbing it with charcoal and rubbing with a tissue.
